What is the HCS Math Pathway? • The HCS Math Pathway is a district-wide guide for math instruction in grades K – 5. • It is a collection of research-based ideas for effective mathematics instruction. • The pathway is a hands-on tool that provides district-wide consistency in lesson planning and pacing. • It is a combination of engaging strategies to enhance students’ conceptual understanding.
Why does HCS need a math pathway? • The HCS Math Pathway will ensure equity for all students in the area of math instruction. • It is needed to provide teachers with sound research on effective mathematics instruction. • Having a single curriculum will foster unity of planning and pacing throughout the district. • The pathway will guide teachers in creating detailed plans to include small group instruction. • It will provide a logical, age-appropriate, and sequential progression for math fact fluency instruction to ensure student mastery. • The pathway will guide teachers in using formative assessment to drive instruction.
How was the HCS Math Pathway created? • The HCS Literacy Pathway was utilized as a model. • Research on best practices was compiled to meet the needs expressed by HCS K – 5 teachers. • The HCS Math Coordinator and District Curriculum Specialists worked throughout the 2018 – 2019 school year to create the pathway. • The HCS adopted math curriculum, enVision 2.0, was used as a foundation for instructional planning and pacing.
How was the HCS Math Pathway vetted and revised? • School curriculum specialists provided input and feedback regarding each component of the pathway. • All K-5 teachers, principals, and faculty members were invited to vet, edit, and offer feedback for each component of the pathway. • Based on the feedback received, • instructional planning guides were updated, edited, or completely rewritten. • additions were made to the differentiation, small group instruction, planning, and first weeks of school sections. • lesson plan templates were revised for ease of use.
What are the components of the HCS Math Pathway? • Effective math instruction • Organizing the math classroom • Formative assessment • Innovative strategies for student learning • Planning effective and differentiated math lessons • Comprehensive and sequential pacing to include logical and appropriate math fact fluency development • Instructional planning guides
How will the HCS Math Pathway be supported? • K – 5 math Pathway Training for principals was conducted on March 27, 2019. • Teacher Pathway Training sessions will be conducted between April 8 – May 2, 2019. • Organizing the Math Classroom Training will be conducted in June and July, 2019. • Number Talks and Counting Collections Training will be conducted in June, 2019. • District support will be provided throughout the 2019 – 2020 school year.
