    4. What Is "Plain English"? "For a document to be in plain English, the people who use it must be able to find the information they need easily and understand it the first time they read it." -- Janice Redish PhD, Harvard University

    28. Find the Proverb Hidden in the Puffed-Up Language As with the sire, so it is with the scion. Avian vertebrates of similar plumage congregate concertedly. A suture emplaced in a timely fashion precludes the necessity for a nonet of such attachments. It is fruitless to become lachrymose because of scattered lacteal fluid.

Articles which coruscate are not fashioned from aureate material, at least not necessarily. A rotatorily locomotive mineral fragment is consummately incapable of bryophytic accumulation.

    31. Simple language works Never fear big long words Big long words name little things. All big things have little names; Such as life and death, peace and war Or dawn, day, night, hope, love home. Learn to use little words in a big way. It is hard to do, but they say what you mean. When you don’t know what you mean, use big words. That often fools little people. Art Kudner to his newborn son

    32. Make Your ‘Bottom Line’ Your Top Line

    36. To do our work, we all have to read a mass of papers. Nearly all of them are far too long. This wastes time, while energy has to be spent in looking for the essential points. I ask my colleagues and their staffs to see to it that their reports are shorter. The aim should be reports which set out the main points in a series of short crisp paragraphs. If a report relies on detailed analysis of some complicated factors, or on statistics, these should be set out in an appendix…. Let us have an end of phrases such as these: ‘It is also of importance to bear in mind the following considerations’ or ‘Consideration should be given to the possibility of carrying into effect’. Most of these wooly phrases are mere padding, which can be left out altogether, or replaced by a single word. Let us not shrink from using the short, expressive phrase, even if it is conversational. Report drawn up on the lines I propose may at first seem rough…. But the saving in time will be great, while the discipline of setting out the real points concisely will prove an aid to clearer thinking.
