  2. History of Railroads • Railroads needed to be invented so goods could travel faster • People wanted train so they could travel • John Stevens invented a locomotive that went around his summer home in Ney Jersey

  3. The Best Friend in S.C • The Best Friend was built in New York then shipped off to Charleston. • When The Best Friend got to Charleston it had to be put together. • The Best Friend was presented on Christmas day!

  4. Problems with The Best Friend • After The Best Friend was built, it was working well • An accident caused The Best Friend to blow up • A valve was making a loud noise • The fireman who worked on the Best Friend heard the noise • The noise was getting on the fireman’s nerves • So the fireman tied a handkerchief around the valve • After he tied the handkerchief the steam could not escape so the boiler got hotter and hotter then it burst

  5. Railroads Today • Today railroads are faster and safer then ever • Some railroads help win wars • Railroads brought engineering and architectural to the countryside and cities
