Proper Nouns • Aproper noun refers to places and people only NOT ideas or things • All names of people, cities, states, and countries are proper nouns • Proper nouns don’t have definitions • Some examples of proper nouns include Albuquerque, Truman, Ms. Coleson, Mexico, United States, Mario, Patricia

  3. Proper NounPractice • How is a proper noun different than a regular noun? (Click for Answer) Only people or places can be proper nouns, not things or ideas. • Identify the proper nouns in the following sentences When Ms. Darby walked into her classroom,she saw three students, Angel, Mariah, and Dominic drawing silly faces on her board.   4. Linking Verbs • A linking verb is a verb where you do an action, but don’t move or put any physical effort into the action. • Linking verbs connect the noun with the rest of the sentence. Verbs are always needed for a sentence. • “To be” verbs and sensory verbs are common linking verbs. • Examples of linking verbs include: Am, Are, Is, Was, Were, Smell, Feel, Taste, Seem, Become, Appear

(Click for Answer) A linking verb shows action without a person moving or putting physical effort into the action. • Identify the Linking verbs in the following sentences I was sitting in my living room one morning and becoming bored with TV. I was going to clean house, but decided to go for a walk instead. When I got outside, I smelled someone grilling. I could almost taste it. So I went back inside and decided to cook instead!   6. Adverbs • Adverbsdescribe a verb. They use HOW something is done. • Sentences don’t have to have adverbs, but like adjectives they help us with details. • Adverbs will always be next to a verb. • Sometimes adverbs are just adjectives with –ly added to the end. Most end in –ly. • Some examples of adverbsare: Slowly, Quickly, Clumsily, vigorously, sadly, Happily,
