  2. Geography’s Five Themes • Location • Place • Region • Movement • Human-Environment Interaction

  3. Location - Where is it? • Absolute location – position on the globe. Usually found by latitude and longitude. • Latitude – imaginary lines that run parallel to the equator and measure north and south. • Longitude – imaginary lines that run parallel to the prime meridian and measure east and west. • Relative Location – position of a place in relation to another place. Example – New Orleans is South of Memphis.

  5. Place – What is it made of? • Physical characteristics • such as climate, terrain, landforms, etc. • Human characteristics • How many people live there, what language do they speak?

  6. Regions – How is it similar to another place? • Region - a group of places with at least one common characteristic. It can be either a physical or human characteristic.

  8. Movement • Movement is how people, goods, and ideas move from place to place.

  10. Human – Environment Interaction • This theme is how people use the environment. Think of this theme as the way that people and things in nature exist together.

  11. Homework • What types of technology do geographers use to study the earth? • How do geographers use the five themes of geography to study the earth? • Define geography. • Discuss the difference between latitude and longitude. • Discuss the difference between absolute location and relative location.
