  1. NAS, CCC & You Amy Kern Department of Medicine October 8, 2013

  2. Next Accreditation System • Phase 1 took effect July 1, 2013 • Phase 2 will go into action July 1, 2014 • This transition is your time to make your voice heard with your PD! • Be informed – what info/format will the ACGME require? http://www.acgme-nas.org • How can you help?

  3. CCC – What? • Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) • Review of each trainee’s aggregate performance • Formal grievance process for residents • Ensures adverse evaluations are addressed by program • Committee members = expert evaluators & faculty liaisons

  4. CCC– Who? • Chair (generally not PD) • Diverse faculty who work with residents • May include you! • The Coordinator’s Role: • Schedule meetings & prepare materials • Keep minutes (contact me for examples) • Academic due process – summarized, not verbatim • CONFIDENTIALITY & legal issues

  5. CCC– When & Where? • When: • ACGME will require semi-annual reporting in NAS • Most likely entered by us via WebADS • Suggested frequency: monthly to quarterly • Where: • Hopefully somewhere with comfy chairs – some pilot programs reported taking 1+ hour/resident

  6. CCC– Why? • Consensus – Nobody wants to be the bad guy • Group helps differentiate isolated situations from patterns • Can also identify weaknesses in the program itself

  7. CCC– Our Experience • Medicine RRC first required CCC’s in 2007 • “Problem” focused • Need to figure out mechanism for NAS/milestone semi-annual review of each resident

  8. CCC& Milestones • The 6 core competencies have been expanded to specialty-specific milestones • How do milestones fit into the CCC? • CCC oversees each resident’s progress • Recommends further intervention when necessary • Will dictate progression through the program with NAS

  9. CCC& Evaluations • Theory: Don’t have to use milestones as your eval questions • Different approaches • Entrustable professional activities (EPA’s) • Curricular milestones • Reporting milestones • E-value is entering the curricular and reporting milestones to make eval creation easy

  10. NAS & You • My Advice: • Get to know your requirements • Try to think ahead about the information flow • Don’t get complacent – site visits can be triggered any time
