Variable Stars Delta Librae & U Ophiuchi
About Variable Stars • Variable stars are stars that vary in apparent brightness over a period of time. • There are 2 types of variable stars: intrinsic and extrinsic. • Intrinsic: lumunosity actually changes (ex: pulsating stars, big sun spots) • Extrinsic: lumonisity appears to change (ex: binaries)
Conclusions • With a photometer, we were able to measure the varying apparent brightness of the 2 variable stars Delta Librae and U Ophiuchi. • The light might have varied over the time we measured.
Other Conclusions • Clouds have the ability to turn normal stars into variable stars • The comparison stars sometimes varied with a more perfect sin-shaped pattern than the variable stars • We hate clouds, they are almost as bad as graphing in Microsoft Excel
Thank you to everyone who helped read the photometer’s number readout, and to Jeff for letting us use your laptop.
