Findings • A. The decades in which these homes were first used were in the 19th century, but were most commonly used in the U.S. In the 20th century. • B. The typical number of stories is two. • C. Elements in the building materials most commonly include stone, brick, slate and wood. • D. Distinctive features: Outdoor – a low pitched roof with wide, enclosed eave overhang, roof rafters that are usually exposed, decorative beams, porch support bases extending to the ground, and a squared inward slanting porch support. Indoor – Built in natural materials, built in furniture and light fixtures, a fire place, and an open floor plan. • E. Purpose of structure is to bring people away from brutal working conditions into a skilled, creative, welcoming area. Location is nearly anywhere, because the home is designed to fit the environment. • E continued... line – very straight, many horizontal and vertical lines, and angles. Color- the older homes were bland and gray, the newer ones have brighter colors which are cool yet warming. Texture – much of it is rough like stone and brick. Rhythm – not exact symmetry but not to organic. Balance – The entire house is designed the same, balancing its features. Proportion and size – very open spaced and well proportioned, made for residential purposes or small businesses.

The style is structured for residential purposes or even a small business, architects that may have used it includes English reformer William Morris, who began the movement to revive handicrafts. • H. Location can be anywhere because the style always tends to match up with the environment, but are usually found in the suburbs. • CONCLUSION • 1. The culture of the people reflects the style, because it shows how the movement changed those of plain boring homes into creative warming homes with style. • 2. The advantages are the space, warmth and enjoyment of the home, disadvantages.. probably expensive.
