Describe an event in your community that encourages more people to be involved in dance as participants or audience. (a) Describe an event in your community that encourages more people to be involved in dance as participants or audience. • Christchurch • 2008 is its 7th year • 3 weeks long – September/October • Celebration of Dance in all its forms • Performances, dance films, workshops, master classes, meetings, outdoor events – something for everyone.
Performances • Flicker by Anne Dewey • “Spinning Sun presents a wondrous adventure in sight & sound.Award-winning choreographer Ann Dewey has created a totally new way to view dance. The audience are taken on a journey where the unexpected follows the sublime. Humour and mystery mix to bring you a dance of great beauty.”
Dance on film • ReelDance • Kids reels – for 3-11 year olds. Featuring children dancing • Contemporary Dance on Screen • Global shorts: Short films celebrating the Dancer’s life. • Christchurch City Art Gallery
Workshops • Master class with Royal NZ Ballet • Contemporary Dance class every morning at NASDA for professionals and students • Charleston, Ceroc, Kapa Haka, Bharata Natyam, Hip Hop for kids, Line Dancing, Flamenco, Tango, Belly Dance, Static Trapeze, Clogging • Nasda, community centres.
Outdoor Events • RHBS Dance Troupe World Record event in Cathedral Square – largest synchronized dance routine in the world. • Only the Strong 2 – B-Boy and B-Girl Battle in Cathedral square.
Meetings • South Island Dance Network Meeting for dancers, teachers, people involved in health and recreation industry.
(b) Discuss the idea that dance is becoming moreimportant to individuals and communities in Aotearoa / New Zealand. Provide evidence to support your discussion. • Dance is becoming more important: • Dance is now a full NCEA subject in schools. Dance programmes are growing. Hillmorton has just added Year 9 and 10 Dance, for example. 10 years ago, Dance didn’t really exist in schools.
Shows like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance are extremely high rating and several seasons have been made.
Some more unusual companies are getting funding. For example, Touch Compass, mixed ability dance group just go a six figure donation for them to obtain a permanent dance studio in Auckland.
* NZ Dancer Magazine reports that the numbers of men and boys enrolling in dance classes has grown since Dancing with the Stars and people like Norm Hewitt showing it’s okay for men to dance.
