Automatic Thoughts • Two levels of thoughts • Surface thoughts (self talk) • This isn't relevant • Waste of time • Core Schema (worldview/belief about self) • I'm not competent
Neurobiology of T > E > B process • When things go right • Lower brain scans for anomalies • sympathetic nervous system engaged • Effects respiration, perspiration, adrenalin and cortisol production, eye dilation, heart rate, muscle tension • Higher brain (frontal cortex) analyzes and responds • Reinforces sympathetic system if danger • Engages parasympathetic if false alarm Note: Evolutionary refinement of fight/flight is anger/helplessness or hopelessness
