history of my story In “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, a sailor shoots an albatross, a bird considered to be a good omen. As a punishment, the sailor is forced to wear the carcass of the albatross around his neck.
present day meaning Today, an albatross is a burdensome, or ongoing problem.
examples • Although we have an outstanding basketball team, our biggest rival continues to be the albatross around our necks. We haven’t won a game against them in over 3 years. • My brother is trying to be rank one in his class, but there was always that one classmate that was always above him and continued to be the albatross around his neck throughout all his three years of high school. • My uncle’s college debts will be the albatross around his neck until he can pay them off completely.
