  9. CHANGE Cross-Cultural 1. Uncertainty Avoidance How does the society deal with the fact that time runs only one way; that is, we are all caught in the reality of past, present, and future, and we have to live with uncertainty because the future is unknown. Some societies socialize their members into accepting this uncertainty and not becoming upset by it. Such societies are called ‘weak Uncertainty Avoidance’ societies.

  10. CHANGE Cross-Cultural 2. Masculinity versus femininity How does the society deal with the division of roles between the sexes. Societies can be classified on whether they try to minimize or to maximize the social sex role division. Where there is a sharp division between what men and women should do and men assume the more assertive and dominant role Hofstede calls the society ‘masculine’.

  12. CHANGE Cross-Cultural 3. Power Distance How does the society deal with the fact that people are unequal.

  13. CHANGE Cross-Cultural 1. Individualism versus collectivism How does the society deal with the relation between an individual and his or her fellow individuals. Is everyone suppose to look after his or her own self-interest and the interest of the immediate family, or is there a collective group of extended family members and the individuals opinions and beliefs are expected to conform.
