What is the Eastern Bloc? • The Eastern Bloc is a term for the former communist states that were located in Central and Eastern Europe • Also referred to as the Communist Bloc
Counter claim • Some people may say that the countries carved out of the USSR are so small that they can’t possibly be of an good • But we say yes they are • For example, Armenian ships out almost 250,000 US dollars of precious metals a year • Which then the US sells to people
The Location • The Eastern Bloc was created before WW2 • It lasted until 1991 • Location of the USSR in 1960
The Creation of the USSR and Eastern Bloc • The USSR was created in 1922 as a result of WW1 • The Eastern Bloc was created later that year • The USSR was created through war
Early History • From 1927 to 1953 the USSR was engaged in many things • Such as the WW2 • Joseph Stalin transformed the USSR by strong economic power • Joseph Stalin played a pivotal role in early USSR
The height of the USSR • Nikita Khrushchev was the dictator during the height of the USSR • During his reign some landmark events occurred • Such as: The Berlin Wall was built • And the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred The Berlin Wall separated West Berlin from East Berlin and Communist from non-communist
The Fall of the USSR • The USSR saw the end coming for a while • On Feb 24, 1990 the first republic of the Soviet Union declared independence • Five more followed shortly after • Then on December 26, 1991 the USSR officially fell 1. Armenia, 2. Azerbaijan, 3. Belarus, 4. Estonia, 5. Georgia, 6. Kazakhstan, 7. Kyrgyzstan, 8. Latvia, 9. Lithuania, 10. Moldova, 11. Russia, 12. Tajikistan, 13. Turkmenistan, 14. Ukraine, 15. The Aftermath • After the USSR fell the countries had to develop their economies • Reorganize their political systems • And, settle territorial disputes between each other
Connections to the present day • People today still remember the days of rebellion • With the 20th anniversary back in 2011 it is now coming up in current events
