Windows 2003 R2 • Minor revision • Based on Server 2003 SP1 • Optimized for remote server (branch office) management • See other new features here • Latest Service Pack for 2003 R2 Server is SP2
Windows Server roadmap • Windows Server release cycle – plan is to issue major upgrades (kernel change) every 4 years, minor releases every 2 years. • Windows Vista is the latest desktop version of Windows (released 1/29/2007) and Windows Server 2008 (released 2/27/2008) is the latest server version. • Microsoft will provide Mainstream support for 2003 Server until July 13, 2010. Then Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2 will transition from the Mainstream Support phase to the Extended Support phase.
Windows 2003 New Features • New Active Directoryfeatures– improved search functions, easier and faster! Saved Queries folder to access a set of dir. objects. Improved Replication. Can rename domains.

Windows 2003 Workgroups, Domains and AD • Workgroups Vs Domains- Workgroup – logical grouping of network devices for resource sharing; peer-to-peer arrangement; decentralized- Domain – logical grouping of network devices for resource sharing; centralized authentication and management of resources
Windows 2003 Workgroups Workgroups: • User accounts are created on each computer (local account database) • No centralized management or security • Duplication of accounts on each computer • Ideal for small groups of technically capable users
Windows 2003 Domains • User accounts are centralized in the common database • Central security and resource management • A user only needs one account to access all resources • Require a server to be a domain controller • Need careful planning and design • Computers need to join the domain • Each computer still maintains its own local user database
Active Directory • Centralized data store • Hierarchical, tree-like structure • Everything is represented as an object • Centralized security and authentication • Centralized management and administration • Expandable, scalable
