Funding from citizens & public funds Nonagricultural employment, opened options to females First school in Connecticut in 1839
About the schools 1852 Massachusetts pass law orders kids (ages 8-14) to school Private schools, Christian schools, tutors, foreign schools Rows of benches, blackboards brought in 19th century
American Children Education Learned basic literacy at home Spelling bees, debates Obedience, politeness, honesty Basic grammar school education Reading, writing, math, history, geography
African-Americans • Illegal to go to school in the South • Only two schools for them in NY, three in Philadelphia • some children vandalized their schools • Slaves were denied education • Few taught by masters • Read newspapers or a Bible • Not allowed to learn to write
Special Needs Children Not a lot of support 1817 Rev. Thomas Gallaudet opened school in Connecticut for the deaf Samuel Howe taught the blind with string on cards to make letters Laura Bridgman first blind & deaf student to be successfully educated
