  1. Choosing a Method to Solve ProblemsProperties of Math Unit 1-5 Pages 26-28

  2. Warm Up Problems Use Mental Math to find each listed fraction of80 1/2 = 1/10 = 1/4 = 1/5 = 40 8 20 16

  3. Choosing an method to solve Mathematical Equations. Objective: Students will learn how choose an appropriate method of computation to solve math equations, tell why that is the best method.

  4. There are3different Methods that we will use to solve math equations in this unit. #1 Paper and Pencil. #2 Mental Math. #3 Calculator

  5. Which one we choose is based on the Size of the Numbers Type of question asked Number of calculations #1 Paper and Pencil. #2 Mental Math. #3 Calculator

  6. Every day about 120 tons of cosmic dust enters Earth’s atmosphere. How many tons of dust enter into the atmosphere in one year? These numbers not compatible, so mental math is not a good choice, using a pencil will involve many steps for solving this question, so using a Calculator is the best method to use. 120 tons = 1 year (365 days)

  7. How Many known moons are their in the solar system? It would be very hard to keep track of all these numbers in your head, but the numbers are small, and don’t need to be added up with a calculator. Using Pencil and Paper to solve this question would probably be the best method.

  8. The average Temperature on Earth is 59 degrees F. The average temperature on Venus is 867 degrees F. What is the difference in Temperatures? These numbers are small, and there are only 2 of them. We know that 59 is close to a multiple of 10, so solving this problem Mentally is the best method to use.

  9. We have 3 problems. Which method would be the best way to solve them? WHY? Talk to your partner, and share your opinions. Simplify 4+3+2+10+8+2+5+1 Simplify 4,562 - 397 Simplify 9,288 24

  10. #1 Chose a method, and solve What is the total number of Astronauts that have space flight experience?

  11. In the 2004 Summer Olympics 929 medals were given out. The United States won 103. How many medals were not won by the United states? #2 Chose a method, and solve

  12. #3 A factory produces 126 golf balls per minute. How many golf balls can be prepared in 515 minutes? Chose a method, and solve

  13. Homework • Page 27-28 • 4-16 • Review For Mastery Worksheet 1-3 • 16 questions
