AP LANGUAGE and composition Is it right for you?
What is it? At present, AP Comp is the only AP class offered on-site at RHS. As an AP class, Comp offers the 0.36 GPA boost all AP classes earn (for current juniors and sophomores). • AP Comp, as it’s commonly called here at RHS, is an English elective. • AP Comp stresses the writing skills and critical reading analysis necessary for college success.
Who can/should take it? • First off: Unlike some schools, you do NOT have to be on the gifted list to enroll in this or any other AP class. • I do recommend you have a “B” average or better in your 9th and 10th grade English classes; however, students with lower grades who have a strong interest in the class may meet privately with me to discuss your options. • This class is for any college-bound student desiring to develop, strengthen, or improve his or her writing skills appropriate to the college level. • As an elective, this class does not replace English 11 or 12, but it can help you with those classes, or for juniors, can help prepare you for Dual English your senior year.
What’s the difference between AP and Dual classes? AP classes Dual Classes For current sophomores and juniors, no GPA boost Guaranteed college credit awarded from SWCC if you make a “C” or better. Usually costs about $45 per semester • Offer GPA boost of 0.36 per class • May result in college credit depending on your AP Exam score AND your college of choice • Class is free; College Board-administered AP exam is $90 for those who do not qualify for a fee waiver
Choosing Ap or dual? The choice should be based on each student’s individual goals and needs. For many students, dual is the better option. For others, ap may be the right fit. Most successful college-bound students take a combination of both.
Why AP Language and Comp? • GPA boost • Helps prepare students for the verbal portion of the SATs (required testing for students who plan to go straight into a four-year college or university). • Possible college credit • “Prestigious” and therefore helpful when applying for competitive schools and scholarships • Strengthens writing skills for use on the SOL or in other subjects • BUT, in my opinion, the most important reason of all…. AP Language and Composition prepares you for college writing.
