  1. X-ray Timing and Polarizationmission & instrumentation DONG Yongwei Center for Particle Astrophysics Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

  2. XTP Scientific objectives • Scientific Problems • One Singularity (BH), • Two Stars (NS and magnetar), • Three Extremes (gravity, density, magnetism) • The effective area of focusing telescope has been confirmed to be the breakthrough capability of the merged mission. • The unique polarization measurement capability has been selected as the distinguishing feature. XTP will open a new window using its powerful capability of polarization observation.

  3. XTP payload configuration FL: 5.5m, FoV 16’,1~30keV 4000cm2@2~6keV, 300cm2@30keV FL: 4.5m, FoV 16’,0.5~15keV 5000cm2@2~6keV 1°×1°,8-100 keV 2500 cm2

  4. Summary of focal payload

  5. X-ray optics • Nested quasi-wolter I type • Mirror length 100 mm • Thickness 0.2 mm • F/D ~ 10 • Inner: W/Si; outer Ir • Slumped Glass/ Al foil

  6. Focal plane detectors • SDD/SPD, or DePFET(MPE) 100-pixel Si-PIN detectors. FWHM=1.1keV@60keV at room temp. 7 SDD detectors. FWHM=160eV@5.9keV at room temp.

  7. Polarization meas. using GEM-TPC • Cross-section of photoelectric effect

  8. Transmissive design of GEM-TPC Focused beam Focal plane @Tsinghua University

  9. High energy X-ray Collimating Array • The collimator is made using Lithographie - Galanoformung - Abformung (LIGA) technique. • Nickel, hole size 170*170μm, • Grid thickness 30μm, • Height 0.6mm Sketch map of One HCA module CZT detector is applied.

  10. Wide Field Camera • The WFC is to monitor the transient X-ray sources and to localize them with an accuracy of 5 arcmin. • With the slew of platform, other instruments will be guided to make follow-up observations.

  11. XTP effective area XTP area and background

  12. Launcher • LM-3C, 2 boosters.

  13. LM-3C launch capability • The launch capability of the LM-3C for LEO mission into a 200 km circular orbit with an inclination of 28.5 deg is 9,100 kg. • 550km & 28.5 deg ~ 6 t. • Altitude easy to be changed. Inclination angle NOT! LM-3C launch capa. for GTO orbit

  14. XTP orbit • Basic para. • Altitude 550 km • Inclination angle 28 degree (14 degree as backup). It depends on the particle background, particle flux, SAA crossing time, earth occulation, ground stations

  15. Miscellaneous • Mass: <3200 kg (satellite); ~1100kg (payload) • Power: 1300W (platform); 1000W(payload) • Launch time: ~2020 • Lifetime: 5 years (expected, 10 years) • XTP has been selected as a background project by the Strategic Pioneer Program (SPP) on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. • X band data: rely satellite or international collaboration (if the inclination angle is too small) • Focal plane detectors & collimating detectors Thanks!
