What was the significance of the Persian Wars? • Gave the Greeks the confidence that they could defeat the Persians and defend their homeland • Spread the Polis and its’ values far beyond the shores of Greece • Greek culture prevailed in the Mediterranean world • Greek political and intellectual concepts became the basis of western civilization
2. What was the function of the Delian League? • 478 B.C. Athens joins with allies to defend against the Persians • Intended as a free alliance, but Athens provided the majority of the resources and controlled the purse strings • Athens became increasingly more imperialistic • Athens started to treat its’ allies as subjects and replaced problem governments (allies) with puppets • Sparta became alarmed by Athens increasing power
3. How was the Delian League corrupted? • Athens under the leadership of Pericles started to use Delian League funds for the glorification of Athens itself • Athens became imperialistic in nature
4. Who was Pericles? • The greatest Athenian leader • Led Athens through a period of prosperity and cultural achievement • Turned Athens into a showplace using Delian League funds to pay for public works, monuments, and temples • The Parthenon was the showplace of this • Art, literature, and drama began to flourish at this time • Died during the 430 B.C. plague that hit Athens
5. What was the significance of the Peloponnesian War? • Lasted a generation (431-404 B.C.) • Resulted in plagues, famine, civil wars, and widespread destruction of property and life • Sparta won but in victory both Sparta and Athens were vulnerable to future defeat and destruction

What were the key events of the Peloponnesian War? • 430 B.C. – Sparta laid siege to Athens creating a plague which destroyed much of the city including Pericles • 421 B.C.- Peace of Nicas resulted in a cold war between Athens and Sparta • 405 B.C.- Sparta defeats Athens- blockade of Athens starved the Athenians into submission
