2 1 9 TOEFL Reading ▶Reading Comprehension Zionism Zionism refers to the international political movement by the Jewish, which supports the reestablishment of a homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine. The area is called the Land of Israel which is also known as the Jewish Biblical homeland. The Zionist movement has continued, primarily supporting the modern state of the Israelites since the foundation of Israel. The modern movement began mainly in Europe as a response to anti-Semitism across Europe. It has grown dramatically since then, becoming dominant among other Jewish political movements. The movement was formally established in the late 19th century. It encouraged the migration of Jewish people to the land promised by God according to the Bible. Jewish migration to Palestine started since early 1880s with most of the immigrants coming from Russia at the beginning. In 1897, the first congress was formed at Basel, creating the World Zionist Organization (WZO). It later led to the success in establishing Israel, the Jewish homeland in 1948. The term “Zionism” derived from the word “Zion.” Under King David, it referred to the city of Jerusalem and the Land of Israel. The Israelites were also referred to as the people, sons or daughters of Zion in the Bible. Zionism is different from Territorialism, which is also a Jewish nationalist movement that aims to establish Jewish territory, but not necessarily in the Land of Israel. Zionism aims to fight all kinds of anti-Semitism. Zionists believe that Zionism can put an end to anti-Semitism. They prefer to speak and modernize Hebrew language, giving themselves Hebrew names, etc. Since the foundation of Israel, the role of Zionism movement has become far less important. However, the ideology still takes a critical part in the Israeli and Jewish political minds. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.
