Do you like your name? • Do you know why your parents chose it? • Do you think your name suits you? • Do you think other students’ names suits them? • Do certain names suggest a certain type of person?
What does the name Romeo suggest? • Unusual but used to describe someone being romantic– • due to links with the Romeo and Juliet play • Also because of first syllable ‘rom’ – ‘romantic’ and the lilting ‘o’ sound at the end • What does the name Juliet suggest? • A more common name • Consider the individual syllable sounds…’jewel’?
Mercutio, Benvolio, Tybalt, Paris • (Form a circle) • Which two characters sound like they might be Romeo’s friends? • Mercutio and Benvolio are both lilting names ending in ‘o’. • Look in a dictionary – what might elements of these names suggest? • Mercutio- ‘mercurial’ – eloquent, quick-witted and volatile • Ben - ‘benefactor’, ‘benefit’ – someone trying to do good • Volio – voluntary/ volunteer (willing/ wishing)
Tybalt and Paris have different sounding names – they belong to a different group – Juliet, Tybalt, Capulet • Tybalt • Sounds a bit like ‘Tibbles’ – a cat – Mercutio picks up on this in the main fight scene between the two of them • Tybaltis Juliet’s cousin, known as ‘King of cats’ • Any ideas on name associations with Paris? • Capital of France • A Trojan Prince – abducted Helen of Troy in the Greek legend, therefore starting the Trojan war.
