Where do I live? • Most of my species are strictly marine animals • A few have tolerance for freshwater and venture through rivers to look for food • Rays usually live in shallower waters than sharks
What do I do in my free time? • I enjoy swimming around, and am always on the move (due to my lack of a swim bladder). • I spend a lot of my time snacking and preying on small fish • Occasionally swimming towards the shore to see if there are any tasty surfers whose arm I can bite off
Genealogy • All Chondrichthyes have: • Paired fins • 2 chambered heart • Cartilage instead of bony skeleton • Tough scales covered with dermal teeth • 5-7 pairs of gill slits
My special features • Rays use spiracles for respiration instead of mouth • I am ectothermic, so I can last for a while without constant feeding. • Internal fertilization • Give birth to live babies, however I am not a very good mother. (no parental care after birth) • Dermal scales may have evolved into rows of teeth in mouth • Lateral line sensors enable me to detect minute disturbances in the water. Ampullae of Lorenzinidetects weak electrical fields .
Are you the one for me? • Someone who won’t be intimidated by my size, teeth, or long sting • Someone who is not small and juicy, so I’m not tempted to eat them
