Our Story • Owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, his wife Phylland his sister Alison • Planted his first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough in 1980 • One of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area
Martinborough • Located on the southern part of the North Island • Produces around 1% of New Zealand’s total wine volume • Moderate climate with coastal influence from the south and east • Ancient river terraces with deep alluvial deposits and stony soils • Long ripening season • Wines have excellent concentration, texture and depth
Wairarapa Valley, Martinborough Ata Rangi
Vineyards • All located within the Martinborough appellation • Made up of 60 ft. deep, mineral-laden, free draining river gravels • Broken into 80 distinct parcels • Includes legendary “Abel” Pinot Noir Clone from Burgundy • Pinot Noir vines are among the oldest in New Zealand
Sustainability • Has achieved ISO14001 accreditation – rigorous & regularly audited environmental management system • Focus on soil health • Restoration of New Zealand’s stunning red flowering Rata trees • Currently in transition to fully organic status • Founding members of Sustainable Winegrowing of New Zealand
Winemaking • Helen Masters, Head Winemaker • Traditional winemaking practices with indigenous yeasts used • Parcels are picked separately then co-fermented depending on the age of the vine • All Pinots barrel aged with French oak with low toasting levels • Daily monitoring
