Free Response Question Thanks to Ben S. for the lettering tips…. Tips
The purpose of this practice today is to increase your awareness of how to successfully construct a Free Response answer.
Before you begin writing….. • Read the prompt thoroughly, then re- read the prompt. 2. Underline important directions in the question such as: “OR”, “CHOOSE ”and the power verbs such as: ‘DESCRIBE,’ ‘IDENTIFY,’ ‘LABEL,’ ‘CONSTRUCT,’ ‘DESIGN,’ or ”EXPLAIN’
Prewriting….. 1. Jot down the big ideas you want to mention 2. Even if the question seems odd or you draw a temporary blank, find the ‘core topic’ being asked and write down notes on what you know 3. Limit yourself to 20 minutes per free response
The Response ……… • Write in complete sentences. Outlines, Bullet Points, Pictures, no matter how elaborate and accurate, are not acceptableand will not get you much, if any, credit. 2. If you are given data, always use it in your answer. 3. Answer each letter separately!
The Response Con’t ……… 3. If you use a diagram, carefully label it (it will get no points otherwise) and place it in the text at the appropriate place--not detached at the end. Be sure to refer to the diagram in your answer.
And lastly ….. 1. Don't leave questions blank. There is no penalty for a wrong guess, baadspelig; or no good grammar. 2. Read your answer over to make sure it answers the question!
