State Library of Iowa • Provides free online access to The Des Moines Register, the Press-Citizen of Iowa City, and many other databases, to any Iowa citizen who has a State Library of Iowa card. • You may request a free library card at: http://www.statelibraryofiowa.org/services/state-library-card/library-card-application-1 • After you receive your library card number, access these newspapers and other online resources through the State Library of Iowa online resources • website: http://www.statelibraryofiowa.org/services/resources
/ Keyword searches in databases & search engines • Put “Keywords” in quotation marks: “Second hand smoking” • Use ANDto connect words that must appear: Ireland AND peace (Ireland + peace) • Use NOT before words you do not want to appear: Titanic NOT movie • Use OR if only one phrase must appear: “mountain lion” OR cougar • Use an * to substitute for letters that vary. For example, “smok*” (for smoke, smoking, smoked) • Use ( ) to group words & combine them with another. Example: (cigarettes OR tobacco OR smok*) AND lawsuits

/ Google Search • In the search line type in: bullying • How many hits did you get? • Do an advanced search to reduce number of hits? • Use words/phrases to narrow the search (school, k12.ia.us, punishment, lawsuits, expulsion) • Check out the left side: • Images • More > Standard View • Wonder Wheel • Related Searches • Timeline
Evaluating Web Sources (WR 382) • Authorship • Is there an author? Check the home page or “about the site” • Is the author knowledgeable & credible? What qualifications does the author have? Is the author an expert on the subject? • Sponsorship • Who is the sponsor of the site? Check the home page. • The URL will tell you: type of group, network, country of origin. • Purpose and Audience • Why was the site created? To sell? To argue? To inform? • Who is the intended audience? • Currency • How current (up-to-date) is the site? Check date of publication or latest update. • How current are the links? If the links don’t work, the site Is probably out-of-date.
