Paper Towel Lab. In almost every store there are many brands of paper towel, each claiming to be the best, the most absorbent or the cheapest. How do we prove or disprove these claims? How do we work out which towels are truly great and which are almost entirely useless?

Paper Towel Lab In almost every store there are many brands of paper towel, each claiming to be the best, the most absorbent or the cheapest. How do we prove or disprove these claims? How do we work out which towels are truly great and which are almost entirely useless? In commercials, we see someone comparing two brands by sucking up some unidentified blue liquid or by wiping up some muddy footprints from their kitchen floor. This, as we know, is not very scientific - there is no data and no proof. Your job is to work with your lab group to create an experiment to determine which of the four brands of paper towels is most absorbent. Create a scientific question • Make observations: • What are paper towels? What are they used for? • Texture, color, patterns of paper towel. • Make a hypothesis: If…then…because • What is the independent and dependent variable? • Create the procedures • A good experiment is controlled. Only change one variable at a time. All other conditions must be kept the same.
Complete your experiment. Make a data table to record your information. • Appropriate headings and units • Make a graph with your data. • Write a conclusion. • Which paper towel worked best? Use data to support your answer. • Is there a correlation between cost and best paper towel? • Restate your hypothesis. Did your results support your hypothesis? • Discuss possible errors. • Relate to real world situations. • State what you learned from the lab.
