Risk management – what it is (and isn’t) • It is a management process to improve outcomes through realising opportunities and managing risks • ‘an event that has an impact on its objectives’ (risk is neither ‘good’ not ‘bad’) • It protects against undesirable surprises and consequences • It doesn’t avoid risks, but manages them down to acceptable levels • It’s not ‘rocket science’ - just common sense! • It doesn’t take much to manage risks - fixing things after the event does!

  4. Tools to manage risks • AS/NZS ISO World Risk Management Standards 31000 (previously AS/NZS 4360 Standards) • Industry standards and legal requirements • DoE guidelines and policies • The 7 Steps of the Risk Management Cycle

  5. Risk Management is as easy as drinking a glass of wine. . . Establish what I am doing. Who is with me? Where do we drink? Identify risk of hangover, spilt wine, lost friends, detention Analyse how likely it is for an event to occur (likelihood) & how serious the outcome (consequence) = Risk Rating Evaluate ‘am I prepared to accept consequences?’ (e.g. loss of licence, costs) (risk appetite) Treat risk – slow down, drink water, go home early Communicate outcomes - tell others to drink responsibly Review effectiveness of actions. Look for improvements and new risks (risks are not static!)

When is a RMP needed? • Major projects (educational, buildings, school fairs) • Strategic planning • Off campus activities, school camps, special activities performed by outside organisations (e.g. running of Schools’ Triathlons) • Special education and learning activities for students • Activities with inherent elevated risks

  9. Managing risks for off campus activities • No different to managing opportunities and risks in other situations & locations – same process • Different environment - different risks • Prepare a risk management plan for ‘away from school’ activities

Emergency management • Emergencies include fire, injury, death, assault, missing students, transport accidents, threats, intrusion, siege, unruly students/outsiders, major facility failure - ‘everything you need help with’ • Lockdowns – every site is different • Who is in charge? (chain of command) • Pandemic & major outbreak of illness • Business Continuity Plans

  14. In summary. . . • The biggest risk is to take no risks • Risk avoidance means no gain, no advancement (and creates new risks) • Decision maker = risk taker = risk manager this means YOU are responsible
