  2. Prospects and Challenges of India China Interactions in the 21st Century Nirupama Menon Rao is an Indian Foreign Service officer currently serving as Foreign Secretary of India. She previously served as Minister of Press Affairs in Washington, Deputy Chief of Mission in Moscow, Joint Secretary (East Asia), the first woman spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry, Chief of Personnel, Ambassador to Peru, High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, and as the Ambassador to China. She is also a poet and has written a book of poetry entitled Rain Rising. Her poems have been translated into Chinese and Russian. She is also an accomplished singer and pianist. This event is jointly organized by India China the New School and The New School Graduate Program of International Affairs

Upcoming Events Crossing Civilizational Boundaries A panel discussion hosted by Liah Greenfeld, University Professor and Director of the Institute for the Advancement of the Social Sciences at Boston University, with Oz Frankel, Associate Professor at the Committee of Historical Studies, the New School for Social Research, Sanjay Ruparelia, Assistant Professor of Political Science at The New School for Social Research, and Jianying Zha, Writer and India China Institute Representative at The New School. The talk will elaborate on the concept of "civilization" and proceed to characterize the Western civilization highlighting some of the fundamental differences that exist between the West and the civilizations of Japan, China, and India. Upcoming Events UNDERSTANDING CHINA in AFRICA: a Potential for New Development Strategies in AfricaLecture by Khalid Malik Thursday, February 24, 2011, 4:00pm-6.00pm 72th 5th Avenue, 3rd Floor, Henri Cohen Room Amongst the controversies generated by the rise of China as a world power is the country's increasing role in Africa.  Often vilified as a neo-imperialist,  China's role in Africa deserves consideration as a new form of partnership between Africa and the rest of the world.  Will Chinese investment influence ideas about development strategies in Africa? Will it reshape the political economy of aid relationships? Khalid Malik is a development practitioner and economist and has held a variety of key managerial, technical and policy positions at UNDP both in the field and at headquarters. He is currently Special Advisor to UNDP Africa on relations with China, having completed his assignment as UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in China in March 2010, a position he has held for 7 years.   5. Upcoming Events Assessing the Economic Rise of China and India Lecture by Pranab K. Bardhan The rate and pattern of growth in China and India over the last quarter century will be analyzed with special focus on poverty, inequality, environmental fallout, and other political economy issues of the nature of capitalist development and those of governance and accountability. The talk will draw upon my recent book, Awakening Giants, Feet of Clay: Assessing the Economic Rise of China and India (Princeton University Press) Pranab K. Bardhan, a Cambridge University PhD, has been at Berkeley since 1977, following teaching appointments at MIT and the Delhi School of Economics. He was the chief editor of the Journal of Development Economics for 1985-2003 and the co-chair of the MacArthur Foundation-funded Network on the Effects of Inequality on Economic Performance for 1996-2007.He is the author of 12 books and more than 150 journal articles, and the editor of 12 other books.
