Week 1 Introduction

This course introduces the history of architecture, highlighting the importance of studying its evolution. It covers the works of Marcus Vitruvius Pollio and the three essential qualities of architecture: utilitas, firmitas, and venustas. Students will acquire critical thinking skills and learn to use precedents, methodologies, and cases in architectural history. The course includes an oral presentation, an essay, and an exam.

  1. Week 1Introduction Replacement class to be conducted in Week 2 on Friday, 23rd July 2010

  2. History of Architecture • Why study history? • Marcus Vitruvius Pollio in 40 B.C., whose treatise, The Ten Books on Architecture identified three essential qualities of architecture: utilitas, firmitas, and venustas or commodity, firmness and delight.

  3. Skills to be acquired • Critical Thinking • (In the context of an architect’s work) • Using Precedents in History • Using Methodologies in History • Using Cases and Narratives in History • BAEA2115 – Presenting cases and precedents; architectural criticism; placing cases in its context; literature review /summary

  4. Approach in study • Based on examples of buildings and "their contribution to the development of a style or building technique or for their illustration of cultural expression" (Wodehouse and Moffett, 1989)

  5. Approach in study • Development of different building types and use; the development in construction, material and technique and the approaches in making the science and art of the aesthetics. • Reflected in “commodity, firmness and delight”.

  6. Assignment (40%) • 10% - Oral Presentation in English with Powerpoint (max. 8 slides, 15 minutes) plus hand-in Summary in A4 sheet to everyone in class, to be used for exam. • 30% - Essay (Not more than 8,000 words without illustrations; Arial; font 11; portrait A4 size; single spacing) • Topic: (Architect and Building given by the 2nd week.) • Exam paper – 60% (Exam date: 29 November 2010)

  7. Essay • a. Pengenalan (10% markah)b. Latarbelakang arkitek dan penerangan mengenai “influences” ke atas arkitek tersebut. (15 % markah)c. Falsafah arkitek dan impak teori dan pemikirannya terhadap arkitek-arkitek lain atau/dan pergerakan senibina pada zaman beliau hidup atau/dan masyarakat sezamannya dan pergerakan senibina selepas beliau mati (20% markah)d. Huraikan ciri-ciri sebuah bangunan yang direkainya dan hubungkait dengan falsafah senibina dan ide-ide arkitek secara teori, teknologi, social, ‘cultural’ dan lain-lain (30% markah)e. Kesimpulan. Berikan pendapat anda mengenai kenapa arkitek tersebut adalah penting di dalam konteks sejarah Senibina Barat dan pembelajaran anda (20% markah)f. Rujukan. Senarai segala rujukan yang dibaca dan dirujuk termasuk 2 rujukan yang berjilid dan bukan dari laman web. ‘Wikipedia’ atau encyclopaedia tidak diambil kira. (5% markah)
