  3. Progression Conference - 2012 University applications and admissions Olivia Ramsbottom, Admissions Manager • Higher Education is going through a time of significant change, and UCAS, Admissions professionals and Student Advisers have a lot to think about as a result! • Olivia will give an update on any changes being actioned or debated in the sector, including UCAS changes, the challenges of the Student Number Control and the unrestricted recruitment of  AAB + students. • Olivia will share some of the internal debates going on at the University of Derby, including those about entry criteria, students’ preparedness to study at Higher Education level, the value of level 2 and level 3 qualifications in supporting transition, and other ways to find out applicants’ suitability.

  7. Admissions – things that are taxing my brain! • Application Figures – what do they mean? • UCAS – current and future (inc. Admissions Process Review, Qualification Information Review) • Student Number Control (SNC) – Challenges • AAB +

  8. Admissions – things that are taxing my brain! • Entry criteria 2013 • Changes to Admissions Policy – Access criteria, ‘additional’ qualifications, GCSE levels • To interview or not to interview • Students’ preparedness

  9. Application Figures • Comparison to 2011 • Comparison to 2010 • 2011 – bumper year • Variables – fees, tariff points, brand, reputation, economy, job market • Going up the league tables…..what does that mean?

  10. Application Figures • Why do students choose certain Universities? • Why do students decline offers? • ‘Marketisation’ of HE – sales and conversion – the student as customer – range of stakeholders

  11. UCAS • APR – PQA (again!) • ‘UCAS plans to implement a programme of continuous improvements: • information provided to applicants throughout the application process will be markedly improved • greater flexibilities in Extra that will enable more applicants to hold both a firm and insurance offer before Confirmation.

  12. UCAS • Clearing will be replaced with a fair and managed process for applicants’ (TDA/GTTR Consultation, UUK Consultation, QI Review Consultation)

  13. Student Number Control (SNC) and Targets – Challenges • Restricted Numbers, as last year • Complicated process of adding and subtracting certain groups of students to meet SNC target • Problem with stage 2 and 3 • Students responding late to offers as some Universities delaying decisions because of tight SNC • Predictions based on previous years - problems • UoD taking late applications in most areas (including selective courses, although in some cases only for waiting lists)

  14. AAB + • AAB+ and equivalent uncontrolled • AAB+ equivalents don’t include some less traditional qualifications • What will happen at Confirmation? • All people who applied to AAB Universities and didn’t meet terms of offers – rejected? Probably. • More/fewer people in Clearing? • More/fewer people going to Insurance? • Adjustment? • Future – AAB becomes ABB

  15. Entry criteria 2013 and future • 2013 entry criteria agreed and about to be published • Slightly reduced from 2012 • Inclusion of additional qualifications • We offer in tariff points.

  16. Changes to Admissions Policy – Access criteria, ‘additional’ qualifications, GCSE levels • Access criteria set in line with what we expect from A level – too harsh for nature of student – still under discussion • Additional qualifications to be taken into account • Admissions Policy ‘Equality Analysed’ • GCSEs

  17. To interview or not to interview • Possibility of more interviews – to ensure student right for course/course right for student • Interviews to give student real experience of who we are and what we do • More realistic understanding, more realistic choices • Put people off or welcomed?

  18. Students’ preparedness • GCSEs – surprising number of students without minimum of 5 GCSEs • Surprising number of students who haven’t re-done Numeracy and Literacy in some form after GCSE failure • BTEC First Diploma • Level 2 skills supposed to be good indicator • Disparity between level 2 and level 3 predictions – what we’re doing

  19. Questions/Thoughts ?
