Noir Themes: The Haunted Past • Escaping past burdens, traumatic incidents and crimes of passion • Fleeing one’s demons • Characters seek concealment in dark alleys and dimly lit rooms • Redemption only comes from confronting the past
Noir Themes: Fatalistic Nightmare • Events are linked in an unbreakable chain and lead to a heavily foreshadowed conclusion • Deterministic universe ultimately overrides good intentions and high hopes
Archetypes: The Truth Seeker • Seldom the Private Investigator • Often an officer of the law, a criminal or occasionally a woman • Primary goal is to navigate the convoluted maze of the noir universe
Archetypes: The Hunted • Influenced by existentialism and fatalism • Frequently pursued and hunted from beginning to end • Feels universe is ruled by chance • Drawn to criminal acts
Archetypes: The Femme Fatale • An alluring, seductive woman who ensnares her lovers, often leading them into dangerous situations • Has hidden purpose for seduction which is often her sole benefit • Tortures lovers and drives them to obsession
