  1. Targets for higher Mock Extreme Environments Exam June 2010

  2. Question 1(a) • Use the scale to help you to describe the location of places using distances. • Use the resource provided to help you describe in the exam in this case, country name, location within states, direction, distance from ocean would have given you marks.

  3. Question 1 (b) (i) • Range means the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature. • Make sure you read the scale of graphs accurately!

  4. Question 1 (b) (ii) • Keep an eye on the command words, in this case it is in two parts... Suggest how (hotter in the day colder at night). Then explain why... (this is because of cloudless sky’s which let heat energy in during the day, but out into the atmosphere at night)

  5. Question 1 (c) • Keep an eye on the command words, in this case it is in two parts... Explain why deserts are hot (latitude / angle of the sun / lack of cloud cover). Then explain why deserts are dry... ( high air pressure / lack of clouds and precipitation) • To get higher marks for levelled questions you need to develop the points you make. Sentence connectives like this means that help you achieve this.

  6. Question 2 (a) (ii) • You need to develop the points you make about vegetation adaptations. Sentence connectives like “this means that...” Are essential when the question says Explain how... • You need to revise the adaptations of vegetation in a desert

  7. Question 2 B • You describe the activities well but to get maximum marks you need to say why these activities are challenging in a desert environment. EG This is a challenge because in a desert environment it is... (Then develop) This means that... • If it says “ for a named desert you have studied” NAME IT! The desert I have studied is the Sahara. Particularly in the country of Algeria. • Develop your points! Not just... This is the challenge.... Once you have described it say WHY it is a challenge for every point you make! • If the questions says different groups and you only name one... You are losing marks. You MUST name at least two if it says “different groups” • You will need to revise the uses of the desert we have covered. Particularly your ability to identify and name nomadic tribal people like the Bedouin. • The command word “to what extent” means that you must make a judgement on how easy or difficult the group(s) find the challenges posed by the desert. You get maximum marks if you address this.

  8. Question 3 (ii) (1) You need to be describing not just listing, food, shelter, clothing isn't enough in the way of a description to get four marks!

  9. Question 3 (b) • If it says ONE physical process and landscape feature... Just write about / draw diagram of one process and one landscape feature! • Make sure you are clear about the difference between the physical processes and landscape features.

  10. Question 4 (a) (i) • Make sure you can read of figures from the graph accurately, particularly if they specifically mention them! • If the question asks you to use figures to describe a pattern... USE FIGURES from the graph! • If the question says between 1860 and 2010 and you describe another period you cant get the marks! • A good answer would look like this... “The temperature is increasing. In 1870 the temperature is 13.4. By 2010 this has increased to 14.5, an increase of 1.1oC. The temperature has fluctuated between these dates but the general trend is an increase.”

  11. Question 4 (a) (i) • Impacts suggest that the examiner expects you to explain more than one impact of temperature rise on the Arctic! • If the question says impacts on the natural environment and you mention impacts on people... You can’t claim any marks, even if what you write is true! • The command word explain means that a sentence connective like “This means that needs to follow each point you make about a likely impact! • If you had explained three impacts rather than just two in this way, you would have been on for full marks! (keep an eye on the amount of marks each question is worth. Anything worth 6 marks or more, you should really give at least three developed points for where possible)

  12. Question 4 (b) • For maximum marks on questions like this when it says a place you have studied, show that you have studied a specific place E.G. “In the Yamal peninsula in Northern Russia”. • If you had explained three impacts rather than just two in this way, you would have been on for full marks! (keep an eye on the amount of marks each question is worth. Anything worth 6 marks or more, you should really give at least three developed points for where possible) • If the questions says “Other than climate change...” and you talk about climate change... You dont get any marks! You must read the command / key words very carefully

  13. Large areas of permafrost melt. This means increasing levels of methane are released which enhances temperature change. This is a particular issue for Siberia in Russia as this is where temperatures are already rising fastest, 10oC in the last 10 years. Point Development Place specific details
