  2. When I am reading at night I have no light source so if I have a light beside me then I wont have to strain my eyes. The lamp/table will be the height of my bed so it is easy to reach and provides enough light, for me to read successfully. I will design and make something in design and technology to help me fix this problem. PR0BL3M

  3. MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTIONS: there are a lot of materials that can be used for this project such as oak, mahogany, pine, plastics, metals etc. My project will be made out of mahogany. The most suitable materials for the job are pine and other hardwoods. There are many different construction methods for this project such as wood turning, wood joints etc. RESEARCH SAFETY: no sharp edges, non-toxic finish, electrically safe. COST: The product will not be expensive to make. Teenagers and adults will want to buy it. It is cheaper to make and buy than other competitors. ENVIROMENT: My project will be used indoors. It should blend in with it’s environment. It can be designed to be environmentally friendly. It will not have to stand any extreme conditions. Lamp/Table FUNCTION: the product is being designed to provide a light source near a bed. The product should provide light near a bed. It is important that the product looks good. PRIMARY FUNCTION: It will provide light for my room. SECONDARY FUNCTION: I want it to look good and to look like its an exiting products. I also want to manufacture my product so that it fulfils its primary function. ERGONOMICS: the products user will be me. The parts if the body that will be using my product will be the eyes, hands, fingers. AESTHETICS: my product will be pink and to make it this colour I will paint it. The product will not look any different to the rest of the furniture around it. It will be in height with my bed.

  4. TABLES I like this product because it is small and elegant. It would not be ideal to have a lamp in it though a sits surface is too thin to secure a lamp. I like this product also because it is a similar design as an original lamp and it is also more up to date. The only thing I don’t like is the length of the lamp shade. I like this product as it is the same design as an original lamp. The only thing wrong with it is that the colour may be too dark to produce the right amount of light source that I am looking for. this is a very ideal table for securing a lamp in my project. The only thing I would change about it is I would put proper legs on it. & This product is not ideal for my deign. the width or the legs are too thin and the face is not wide enough. I do not like this product at all. It is a good product for what I want to do to my table but I do not like the design of this one. I like this product because it is attractive and trendy. The only thing that I don’t like about it is that it wouldn’t provide me with enough light. LAMPS I do not like this product at all it is too small and would not produce enough light for the use that my product will need to produce I like the design of this product but I could not use this in my project unless I made the legs of this table longer. This product could not support a lamp and there for is not ideal for my design. I like this product because it is attractive but it would not be suitable to make as my client doesn’t provide ultra violet wires and it would be to dear to manufacture and sell. I like this product because it is easy and cheap to manufacture. I do not like it because of its base I personally think it is too wide and would not suit my surroundings for my product.

  5. RESEARCH-USER/ANTHROPOMETRICS I am designing a bedside table with a lamp built into for in my bedroom. I have decided to INVESTIGATE THE HEIGHT OF MY BED AND MY THE LENGTH OF MY ARMS STRECHED OUT WHILE LYING ON MY BED.

  6. RESEARCH-Materials The possible materials for making my final project are :- Soft wood-this would be a very good material to use for my table as it is a good strong reliable wood. Pine is an example of a common softwood. Softwoods are cheaperthan hardwoods and are easier to work with. Softwoods are normally used for furniture and in the building trade. Hardwood-this would be a very good material to use for the body of my lamp. Oak and Mahogany are examples of hardwoods. Hardwoods are more expensive and aremore difficult to work with, but a better finish is achieved. Hardwoods are normally used for furniture and expensive items like, jewellery boxes.

  7. Block board-this is also a very good material for my project. This is built up with a core ofsoftwood strips bonded together with adhesive and covered with a sheet of plywood on either side. Block board isused as a building material and for furniture manufacture including fitted kitchens / bedrooms.

Specification • KEY: • very important • important • not so important 1) My table/lamp will be used by a teenager. 2) The product is being designed to provided light when it is dark. 3) The product will not be expensive to manufacture. 4) The product will be made out form a softwood such as Pine, a hardwood such as Oak/Mahogany, and also a block-wood. 5) The product safety features will be: No sharp edges, non-toxic finish and electrically safe. 6) The product should suit its environment. 7) It is very important that the product looks good so it will sell, my product will be shaped in different ways so it looks attractive. 8) My product will environmentally safe and will be built from recycled woods and be able to be recycled. 9) It is very important that the lamp is the size that it is meant to be. 10) It is very important that the table is the size it is meant to be as well. 11) The lamp/table should be easy two use so it is important that this is true.

Stages of Work 1)I collected my wood forturningmy lamp. 2) I prepared my wood for wood turning by planning the edges of the wood blank; centre punching the end and putting saw cut in the other end. 3) I first turned the wood blank to a cylinder using a gauge tool. I then cut the pattern I had designed into my lamp using a variety of wood turning tools including paring and other tools. 4)I then followed the same process to turn the four legs for my project. This time I used a pair of odd leg callipers to ensure that I turned all the legs to the same diameter. This time whilst I was preparing my wood I also marked out the location of the mortises, this was to make sure I did not turn too much wood. I also finished my turning to a high quality with glass paper. 5) At this stage I calculated the length of the rails I wanted for my project, measured it and gave my teacher the cutting list.

  12. 6) After successfully completing turning on the wood lathe. I removed the material from the lathe and collected the tools required to mark out my wood, to successfully manufacture mortise & tenon joints for my project. 7) The tools I collected are; mortise marking gauge, ruler, tri square, 10mm mortise chisel, and a tenon saw. 8) I marked out tenons on the rails of my table using the tri-square, mortise marking gauge and ruler. 9) I marked out the mortises on the legs of my project using the tri-square, mortise marking gauge and ruler. 10) Using the tenon saw, with my wood working bench and vice I successfully cut out the tenons for the rails for my project. 11) Next I used the mortise chisel and tenon saw to cut mortises on the ends of the legs for my project. I stopped a regular inter rails to ensure I did not chisel to far, checking depth with a steel rule. 12) After I had completed cutting all the mortises and tenons I dry-clamped tow sets of legs to check for square ness. 13) I checked that my legs were parallel using both a try-square at the ends and by checking that both opposite diagonals where equal in length.

  13. 14) Since dry-clamping proved my design was square I collected glue and more sash clamps. 15) I glued up two sets of legs and rails to form frames for my table. 16) I repeated the dry-clamping to assemble the project as a table. I checked this for square ness using the methods described in step (13). 17) I glued up my table using wood adhesive ensuring that it was still square. 18) Now that I had successfully manufactured the table and the lamp, I then calculated the size my top would need to be, by reviewing my cutting list and checking it was still ok after manufacture. I asked my teacher for the materials to make the top for my project. 19) I then laminated the laminated flooring (which matches the floor in my room) with MDF to give added strength. 20) Next I measured and cut wood that matched my table to edge my top. 21) Before I assembled my project together, I used glass paper and wet & dry paper to remove any pencil marks left from marking out. 22) I wet my table to raise the grain and then sanded it down again.

  14. 23) I then varnished my table frame. 24) I lightly sanded my table again and then varnished it to give a better finish. 25) I assembled all parts of my project together. 26) I added the light fitting to my lamp. 27) I waxed and polished my completed project.
