Learning goals • LG: Perform a combination of rotations on a single 2-D shape, with and without technology, and draw and describe the image • Kid Friendly:Rotate shapes around a certain point • What I think I know:
definition • "Rotation" means turning around a center: • The distance from the center to any point on the shape stays the same. • Every point makes a circle around the center. • http://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/rotation.html
Here a triangle is rotated around the point marked with a "+"
directions • When rotating a shape, you move either clockwise or counterclockwise • The amount you turn is generally communicated by using degrees (example: turn the shape 90degrees clockwise) • It could also be communicated by fractions (example: turn the shape ¼ to the right) • You must pick a spot to rotate around and hold that place in the same spot.
Be careful! The shape will have rotated so all of the coordinates will be in different spots
Rotating zodiacs • Step 1: Find your zodiac print out. Use the printed constellation to design the constellation on your coordinate grid (or Cartesian plane). All dots must land on exact lines. Label each coordinate (A, B, C, D…) • Step 2: Put a dot that you are going to rotate around. Make it a big big obvious dot. • Step 3: Rotate your Zodiac 90degrees counterclockwise. Label each new coordinate. • Step 4: Rotate your Zodiac another 90degrees counterclockwise. Label each new coordinate. • Step 5: Rotate your Zodiac 90degrees counterclockwise. Label each new coordinate. • You now have the rotations of a constellation in one day. With arrows show how much time it takes for the constellation to do a quarter turn.
