  2. Today’s Lesson • Students will be able to define 8 types of government and explain the pros and cons of each

  3. Government • Definition- • Purpose • 1. To keep order in society • 2. To protect citizens from outside invasions • 3. To speak to other nations for its citizens- conduct foreign policy

  4. Types and Forms • Governments for all nations can be broken into two categories • Forms- which explains how rulers get their power • Hereditary-Monarchy • Elected (and sometimes usurp or take power after been elected or selected). This is also known as a republic

  5. Types and Forms • Types – explains the degree of participation that citizens have in their government. This can be described as either • Authoritarian –very limited role • Democratic – citizens have play a larger role in government

  6. Autocracy(Dictatorship) It’s my way or the highway! • A type of government where a single ruler has absolute power

  7. Absolute Monarchy • A type of government where a king or queen has absolute power • (Absolute monarchies are dictatorships) It’s my way or the royal highway

  8. Oligarchy We run things around here! • A type of government in which power is held by a select few

  9. Constitutional Monarchy(Limited Monarchy) • A form of government where the power of the king or queen is limited by law

  10. Democracy(Direct) • A type of government where power is held by the people

  11. Republic(Representative Democracy) • A form of government where power is held by the people, who elect representatives to govern them Who will do the best job representing me? Hmmm…

  12. Theocracy • A type of government where power is held by officials who are believed to be guided by god

  13. Anarchy • The absence of government • This can happen after a civil war in a country, when a government has been destroyed and rival groups are fighting to take its place.
