Factoring Polynomials • Put the polynomial in descending order. • 2. If there is a GCF, take it out! Binomials 4 or more terms Can you factor by grouping? Is it a difference of squares? Is it a Perfect Square Trinomial? Yes No Yes No Factor into: (a + b)(a + b) or (a – b)(a – b) Make a product/sum chart. Find two numbers whose Product is ab and whose sum is c. Type 1 (a = 1) Type 2 (a > 1) nothing worked! Yes No Use the two numbers to re-write the polynomial in factored form. Use the two numbers to Re-write the middle term. Then, factor by grouping. Factor into: (a + b)(a - b) If there was no G.C.F., then it isPRIME! Trinomials Group terms into 2 binomials. Take out the G.C.F.’s. Re-write in factored form. If there was no G.C.F., then it is PRIME! If there was no G.C.F., then it isPRIME!
