  2. How did Halloween Start? • Very old Celtic holiday called “Samhain” • November 1st was the start of the New Year. • The marked the end of summer.

  3. How did Halloween Start? • October 31 was called All Hallow’s Eve. • October is the day when the world of the living and the dead become one.

  4. TRICK OR TREAT! • Poor Celtic children went to homes on October 31st. • They were given food. • For food, they would pray for the souls of the giver’s dead family. • They would pray on All Saint’s Day (Nov. 1)

  5. JACK-O’-LANTERNS • This tradition began when people believed that making scary faces on pumpkins scares away evil ghosts! • We use pumpkins because there are a lot in America.
