vocabulary • Qualitative – non numerical information • Quantitative – numerical information • System – specific region of space, specific portion of matter, specific item of study. • Model – explanation of how something occurs, how data is related. Theory supported by data. • Theory – broad generalization that explains.

Mass • kilogram is the standard • 1000 grams • We use grams – more useful in science class. • Mass measure of matter, does not depend on gravity • Weight – measure of the gravitational pull on the mass
Other Units • Length – meter -- m • Liquid Volume –liter L • Solid Volume – m3 we use cm3 • Time – seconds -s • Vocab – • Derived unit – combination of units like in velocity m/s2, or pressure kg/m s2 • Density - g/cm3 or g/mL
Mass and weight • mass is the amount of matter and will not change with location • Weight is a measure of gravity and will change with location
Density • D = m/v • Ratio of mass to volume • The mass divided by the volume • Physical property

Accuracy and Precision • Accuracy – refers to the closeness of measurement to the accepted value. • Precision - How close all the data points are that are measured in the same way.
Percent error • {Accepted value – experimental value} divided by the accepted value. • Accepted – literature, known value • Can be negative
conversions • Need a conversion factor.-- Two quantities that equal each other, but are in different units. Unit you want to get rid of is in the denominator, the unit you want is in the numerator.
How many inches are in 3 yards? • How many seconds are in 2 days? • How many hours are in 4 months? – (use a 30 day month) • How many books are in 3 boxes of 2 dozen each?
