Aims & Objectives Why? • Introduce Section A of the GCSE Exam (The exam is worth 40% of your GCSE). • Assess your knowledge and understanding of the Action-Adventure genre. • Introduce some of the codes & conventions associated to the genre which YOU WILL need to know for the exam! • Introduce some key ideologies (theory) in relation to this genre (type of movie). • Review the learning. A02– Assess candidates’ ability to analyse and respond to a short, unseen moving image extract using media key concepts and appropriate terminology.

  3. COURSEWORK WILL NOT BE COMPLETED IN LESSONS ANYMORE!

  4. Prove what you know already – Starter 3 minutes YOUMUSTwrite down 3 things you would expect to see in a typical Action-Adventure Movie. Extension: YOUCOULDrefer to examples of texts (movies) in your answer and apply media language/theory where relevant.

  6. YOU WILL answer 3 questions in relation to the 3 Key Concepts above in the exam by deconstructing a 3-5 minute Action-Adventure sequence. YOU WILL be shown the sequence 4 times – YOU WILL be allowed to make notes throughout each viewing a part from the first viewing. The section is worth 50 marks – The whole exam is worth 80 marks.

Codes & Conventions • In your groups of 4YOU MUST spend 3 minutes on EACH area deciding what YOU would expect from an Action-Adventure text (movie) in relation to: • Narrative(Plot, themes & issues presented to the audience) • Genre (What would you expect to be ‘repeated’ – Steve Neale? How are the audience entertained?) • MediaLanguage(Where are Action-Adventure texts set? What props would you expect to see in the genre?) • Representation(What types of characters would you expect to see according to Propp? How are gender roles represented?)

  9. This 10 page booklet WILL help you to learn and understand the codes & conventions of the Action-Adventure genre. It is yours to keep and YOU MUST bring it to lessons and take home to revise from. Make sure your name is written at the top – Make sure you leave the booklet in your folder if you are going to leave it in school!

  11. Character deconstruction: YOU MUST annotate the non-verbal codes presented in this image of well known Action-Adventure character Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) in answering the question: What does he represent? Stick this in after completing the task!

  12. What does he represent? Open shirt connotes how he will provide a ‘female gaze’ (Diana Saco) for the female (Hartley) audience. Iconography – The weapon connotes how he is a ‘Tough Guy’ (Yvonne Tasker – 1993) that will provide some heroism and bravery to the narrative – What do we expect from Jones’ character as well? Strong ‘Alpha-male’

  14. YOU MUST write down the ideologies that will be circled into your exercise books. YOU SHOULD establish whether you agree OR disagree with these statements.

  15. ‘Die Hard’ (1988) Dir. John McTiernan You are going to be shown a short sequence from the first in a popular Action-Adventure franchise. YOU MUST identify where Yvonne Tasker’s and Joel Silver’s ideologies are presented to the audience in the scene. Extension – YOU COULD explain what the intended impact on the audience is meant to be.

  16. Prove what you have learnt– Plenary 3 minutes YOUMUSTwrite down 3 things you have learnt about the Action-Adventure genre today. YOUSHOULDstick this on your screen. YOUCOULDgive a reason why you think this will help you get an A*-C grade.

  17. Homework: Visit the Media Eduwebsite (see email) and go to the Action-Adventure genre under “Film”. Username: ncrafts84 Password: stpauls2013 2) Create a “Mind-Map” of the codes & conventions of the Action-Adventure genre based on what we have learnt today. Due: Tuesday 26th February 2013 The best mind-map WILLwin a prize! Failure to complete the homework willresult in a 1-hour detention after school on Monday 4th March.
