  1. An Intro to Radney Elementary School Alexander City, AL

  2. The World’s Water Supply If all the Earth’s water fit into a one liter (1000 mL) bottle, 97% (970 mL) of the container would be saltwater. Only 10 mL (1%, the approximate volume of a perfume bottle) would be available for drinking water (groundwater and surface water). 30 mL (3%, the approximate volume of a bottle of nail polish) would be freshwater in the atmosphere, lakes, rivers, polar ice caps, and groundwater. Only 2 drops of the freshwater would be lakes and rivers.

  3. What does that mean for us???? All life needs water to survive!!!!!!

  4. Did you know…

  5. Natures Recycling Program Graphic: www.und.nodak.edu/instruct/end/kfarner/pages/cycle.htm • The hydrologic cycle, or the water cycle, links land, air and water within a watershed.

  6. However…. • Alabama also ranks is 5th in the nation for the number of species at risk for extinction • And 40% of streams and rivers assessed by ADEM are impaired (Alabama Rivers Alliance, 2007) Tallapoosa Darter Source: Outdoor Alabama Bald Eagle Source: Outdoor Alabama

  8. AWW Water Chemistry Monitoring • Air Temperature • Water Temperature • pH • Hardness • Alkalinity • Dissolved Oxygen • Turbidity/Secchi Depth

  9. AWW Bacteriological Monitoring • E. coli • Other coliform

  10. AWW Stream Biomonitoring Aquatic Macroinvertebrates • Group I (Low Tolerance to Pollution, Good Water Quality) • Group II (Wide Tolerance to Pollution, Fair Water Quality) • Group III (High Tolerance to Pollution, Poor Water Quality)

  14. The Battle of Horseshoe Bend March 27, 1814

  15. Lake Martin

  16. Watersheds of the world… Mississippi River Basin which empties into the Gulf of Mexico

  17. Middle Tallapoosa Watershed

  18. What is polluting our water? 2 Main Types of Water Pollution: • Point Source Pollution • Pollution that may be traced to a particular point of entry, such as a discharge pipe. • Nonpoint Source Pollution • Pollution occurring mainly through suspended and dissolved substances carried by runoff.

  19. Potential Sources of Nonpoint Source Pollution Urban runoff Agricultural runoff • Oil & grease • Pathogens • Pesticides • Herbicides • Sediment • Nutrients • Nutrients • Pesticides • Herbicides • Sediment • Pathogens Failing septic systems • Nutrients • Pathogens
