Full of Hot Air Lesson Plan By: LiseGelatko Miriam Miles Jeffrey Willis July 24, 2009
GOAL OF THE LESSON • Use /Apply terms volume and temperature. • Understand how temperature relates to the average kinetic energy of the particles.
OBJECTIVES • A.C.O.S. Objective 8.7.1 a – e: Define kinetic energy and kinetic theory of matter • Reinforce Charles’ Laws • Introduce formula for Charles’ Law • Charles’ Law: V1/T1 = V2/T2
“CAN CRUSHERS” • Explain/Draw in detail why the can collapsed in the “Can Crushers” experiment.
DIRECTIONS • Place the Balloon on the mouth of the plastic bottle. • Using tongs place the bottle/balloon apparatus into the hot water bath. • Record the temperature in Table 1 on your data sheet. • Let sit in bath for 2 minutes. • Measure circumference of the balloon using string and metric ruler record in Table 1 on your data sheet. • Repeat for room temperature and ice bath.
Interpreting Data • Graph the data from Table 1. • Be sure to include title, independent variable, scale and dependent variable. • Be prepared to present your results to your classmates.
