Google Scholar By: Philip Schill
What is it? • a function of the Google search engine that allows you to search through scholarly journals, books, legal documents, professional societies, and university websites • allows you to view whole or partial publications of some degree of quality and professionalism • filters out most of the non-accredited sources
Pros • Has Google's advanced search engine • Better chance of getting a free article • Accessible anywhere • Save books to your Google library • Teachers can preview books before they buy them
Cons • Only useful for high school • Not everything is free • Does not provide a detailed summary of the sources that are searched. • Search results are mixed
Use in the classroom This is a great resource for High school Social Studies teachers. Teaching lessons about notable US Supreme court cases? Need scholarly works to supplement the information in your students' textbooks?
Use in the Classroom (continued) • Good source for: • academic papers • book excerpts • legal documents
Use in the Classroom (continued) • Many high schools have an account with Google scholar or Olinks that allows them to view books and articles that otherwise would not be free. • High schools that do not have this set up still have access to many free articles
Conclusion The best use of Google Scholar is to compliment other resources and as a starting point for gathering primary literature
