Moley, Moley, Moley Moles are a Chemist best friend.
What is a Mole? • A mole is not a critter that burrow’s under the ground. • A mole is not a little man that lives under a bridge – that’s a troll • A mole is a group of objects – like a dozen is 12 or a gross is 144
Why do we use the word mole? • The word mole come form the Latin word moles which means a pile of things. • In the case of a mole we mean 6.02x 10^23 objects, molecules, formula units or atoms. • 1 dozen = 12 • 1 pair = 2 • 1 mole = 6.02 x 10^23
Why 6.02 x 10^23? • The number is based on the C-12 isotope. • 12 g of the C-12 isotope has exactly 6.02 x 10^23 atoms. • The atomic mass is therefore a molar mass • So 32.066 grams of Sulfur has exactly 6.02 x 10^23 atoms of sulfur.
Atomic Mass and the Mole • One mole of any element has exactly 6.02 x 10^23 atoms of that element. • You couldn’t possible count that number it is too large.
