Terms • Looking to change policies, practices, technology, norms and organizational structures to bring about the ideal states
Relationships • Share in the mission to establish data stewardship goals in Canada’s research community. • Each task group focuses on specific aspects of stewardship but all three are closely related. • TG1: shaping the environment in which data stewardship takes place; • TG2: articulating the practices and systems needed throughout the data stewardship life cycle; • TG3: establishing the norms and skills need for data stewardship to flourish.
Strategies • Changes have to occur within individual domains. • Processes will be required to introduce change and TG2 will suggest methods that engage domains in this work and that draw upon the appropriate mix of knowledge, skills and norms. • Need to work closely with TG1 & TG3. • Engage willing domains first, lobby the indifferent domains and pressure the reluctant.
Preservation • Focus on practices and services • Key to this is working with a life cycle data management plan • Need to develop OAIS submission information packages (SIP) to be used with Trusted Scientific Data Repositories • Need a service to help prepare and evaluate data management plans • Need a process for identifying the custodians throughout a data management plan
TSDR • Focus on infrastructure • Need plans for building trust scientific data repositories • Need a certification process • Organizing individual TSDRs into a national network requires coordinating agency • Need to develop OAIS archival information packages (SIP) for TSDRs
Standards • Focus on practices • Identify applicable standards through a data management plan • Emphasize the development of metadata standards for the life cycle process • Work with international groups around standards
Access • Focus on practices and services • Need to develop OAIS dissemination information packages (SIP) • Work with existing data services to explore and develop new methods of providing access to data • Train new data service providers • Provide a service to assess disclosure risk and methods of minimizing this risk
