  2. Summary • Beth is sick with scarlet fever. • Meg stays home so she won’t make the King family sick. • Laurie telegraphs Mother to come at once. • Jo fears that Beth has died but Hannah declares that the fever has broken. • Mother and Laurie return to the March house.

  3. The Title • Mother’s train back home got delayed by a snowstorm. • Beth is sicker than expected. • Meg decides to stay home from work. • Jo thinks Beth is dead.

  4. Beth’s Condition • Beth is sicker than expected. • Beth has a fever and is unaware of her surroundings. • Beth’s fever breaks at the end of the chapter.

  5. Sister’s Love • Meg and Jo wait by Beth’s bed, caring for her. • Meg and Jo wait for their mother to arrive. • Jo races to the bed when she thinks Beth is dead. • The sisters and Hannah praise God when the fever breaks.
