THE DOLL’S COME TO MICHIGAN THE JOURNEY FROM GERMANY TO MICHIGAN BY MEGAN DOLL
The Journey Begins In the early 1800s, the family of Slyvester Doll emigrated from Germany to Kentucky to begin a new life in the United States. Slyvester was one of five children and was a twin. His younger brother, Sylvester died at birth. Growing up in Kentucky, the family worked in farming.
Coming to Michigan In the early 1900s, the family moved to Michigan where they settled in northwest Detroit. The family followed many other southern families for the industrial revolution and the bursting car business. Slyvester’s father got a job with the union and Slyvester ran with the Purple Gang during prohibition. His mother was not happy
A new family begins Slyvester eventually married Katherine and the couple settled down and had two boys, Robert and James. Slyvester got a job working as a plasterer and became a master craftsman in the industry. He worked there until he retired. His wife died in 1992 after a short illness.
The second generation Robert Doll grew up and went to Mumford High School where he was a baseball star. He then became the first member of his family to go to college and attended Michigan State university where he played baseball. It was there that he met his wife, Faye Hutson who was also attending the school to study to be a teacher The couple married in 1963.
The Doll Family Bob and Faye settled in Birmingham, MI where they started their family. William was born in 1966 followed by Kristen in 1968. In 1970 they moved to West Bloomfield and their daughter Katherine was born. Bob and Faye still live in that same house. Their children live in Beverly Hills, Chicago and most recently Massachusetts. Bill Doll married Mary Humbert in 1994 and they started their family.
The New Doll’s Bill and Mary moved to Royal Oak and then onto Beverly Hills. Their son Brendan was born in 1998. Megan followed in 2000.
