Objectives • At the end of the lesson, students will be able to: • List the constraints and challenges of the island of Li’ Ttledot • Devise at least 3 ways of attacking/defending Li’ Ttledot • Develop survival skills and attitudes to meet challenges Description ‘The Rise of Li’ Ttledot’ is an exciting game which promotes an application of inter-disciplinary skills in an authentic learning environment. Students are transported to the mysterious Island of Li’ Ttledot where they will devise various attack or defence plans based on the ‘secret’ information provided in their files and CD-ROMS. The scenarios can be constantly updated by teachers based on their learning objectives. Teacher Planning and Management Introduction to Total Defence: Click on the file ‘Introduction to Li’ Ttledot’ for more information about this defence concept. Detailed lesson plan for ’The Rise of Li’ Ttledot’: Click on the file ’Detailed Plan for Li’ Ttledot’. This plan was very useful for me in the context of my class and pupils’ ability-level. This game platform is flexible and can be altered to suit your own needs and requirements. Authentic assessment plan: This activity encourages pupils to approach a problem from different perspectives. A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet can be used to score the students based on 5 different categories. Click on the Excel file below to view the assessment components. Teaching Resources (1) Click the documents below to view the teaching resources used in the teaching of this learning project: Overview of lesson: Click on the file ‘Timeline’ for a quick overview of the sequence of events. Click on the file ‘Presentation to the class’ to start the lesson. This Presentation will give the class a general idea of the objectives of the lesson. It will also give a clear idea of how the class should be split. Essentially, there should be 2 broad groups: Attackers and Defenders. Introduction to Li’ Ttledot: After the students have been grouped, they will be transported to the island of Li’ Ttledot and assume their citizenship as Li’ Ttledotians. After singing the National Anthem of Li’ Ttledot, the atmosphere should be quite exciting. It is now time to introduce the island and their main mission. Click on the file ‘Mission Objectives’ and go through the objectives before returning to the original presentation. Documents
Teaching Resources (2) Click the documents below to view the teaching resources used in the teaching of this learning project: Information Gathering: Students will now need to gather information about this island to plan an attack or defence plan. Click on the file ‘Information for Operation’ for the complete set of data on the island of Li’ Ttledot. Pupils will receive this data in both softcopy (in a CD-ROM), and hardcopy (in a ‘Secret file’). Students will need to understand their role as either an ’attacker’ or ’defender’. They will jot down relevant information to devise a plan to either attack or defend Li’ Ttledot. To help them collect evidence more effectively, two worksheets are provided; one for an attacker and another for a defender. Documents
Teaching Resources (3) Click the documents below to view the teaching resources used in the teaching of this learning project: CD-ROM files: The attackers and defenders will receive a CD-ROM with 5 files relevant to the 5 pillars of Total Defence. The teacher must emphasize that an attacker would view the information very differently from a defender. The information is very much the same as that of the ‘Secret files’ but these multimedia presentations will serve to create a more exciting setting for the activity.. Audio files: These files contain speeches by various ‘Ministers’ and prominent men in the island of Li’ Ttledot. They are catered towards the auditory learners. Assessment and Standards Click the documents below to see the assessment rubrics and standards cover in this learning project: Assessment Rubrics: Students will be scored based on the criteria given in the assessment rubric. A maximum of 10 points is given to each pillar of Total Defence. This is to encourage students to take a more holistic approach to the concept of Total Defence. Sometimes, students tend to think that the Military pillar is the most important factor and thus ignore the other 4 components.
