GENERAL DEFINITION • The raw material in the manufacture of Metakaolin is kaolin clay. Kaolin is a fine , white, claymineral that has been traditionally used in the manufacture of porcelain • Metakaolin is obtained by keeping the pure clay at about 700 ° C for 30-60 minutes and completely evaporating its bound water. • The particle size of metakaolin is smaller than cement particles, but not as fine as silica fume.
BASIC PROPERTIES • Metakaolin is white. • Itcontains high amounts of amorphous silica. • Itpreventsdurabilityproblemssuch as alkali-silica reaction, sulfate attack and flowering. • It provides impermeability to concrete elements.
GENERAL STRUCTURE OF METAKAOLİN • Composed of 50-55% SiO2 and 45-50 Al2O3 Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O -> Al2O3.2SiO2 + 2H2O + Enerji -> METAKAOLİN • Its surface area is 1500-2500 cm2/gr similar to cement. • The density of its is approximately 2.5 g/cm3. • Average Grain Size is below 2 Micron.
ADVANTAGES OF METAKAOLIN • In mixtures containing metakaolin, the setting time is shorter as Portland cement hydrates have more surface area and some of the mixing water is absorbed by the clay over time. • Metakaolin increases the strength values • Although metakaolin differs according to its structural properties, it exhibits performance exceeding silica fume when it reaches the appropriate fineness and reactivity.
ADVANTAGES OF METAKAOLIN Metakaolinconverts CH to C-S-H gel whence; • Itprovidestodecreasingpermeability of theconcrete. • Itprecludes alkali-silica gel. • Andthelastmetakaolinreduces C3A present in cement.Therefore reduces the amount of elongation caused by sulfate attack by up to 50%.
DISADVANTAGES OF METAKAOLIN • Metakaolinreduces workability.Due to its clay structure, it increases the water requirement of the mortar. Therefore, a chemical additive (plasticizer) should be added in the mixtures used metakaolin.
