  2. Gas Giant Planets • More than 13 – 300 times the mass of earth • Interiors are either gas or liquid • Made of primarily light elements • Very cold at their surfaces • Many satellites and rings

  3. Jupiter • Largest planet • Makes up 70% of all planetary matter in the solar system • Red spot • Atmospheric storm has raged for more than 300 years

  4. Jupiter • Rings • 2 very faint rings • 6400 km-wide ring • Very low density • Comprised of hydrogen or helium in a gas or liquid form • Below the liquid hydrogen is liquid metallic hydrogen • Has properties of metal and liquid • Exists only under high pressure

  5. Jupiter • Rotates very quickly • Shortest day at 10 hours • Distorts the shape • Causes belts • Low, warn, dark colored clouds that sink • Zones • Light colored clouds that rise

  6. Jupiter • Moons • More than 60 • Most are very small • Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto • Bigger than our moon • Made of ice and rock • Io is almost completely molten and goes through massive volcano disruption • Europa is believed to have a subsurface of water

Saturn • Atmosphere and interior • Atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium with ammonia ice near the cloud tops • Interior is fluid except for a small solid core • Magnetic field is 1000x stronger than earth’s • Moons • More than 55 • Titan is the largest • Has atmosphere of nitrogen and methane

  8. Saturn • Rings • Comprised mainly of chunks of ice • 7 major rings, made up of ringlets • Caused by gravitational pull of moons • Very thin – less than 200 m thick

Uranus • Atmosphere • Appears blue caused by methane gas • Also composed of hydrogen and helium • Strong magnetic field • Interior is fluid except for small solid core • At least 27 moons and a very faint ring system • Rotates sideways • Causes 42 years in darkness and then 42 years in light at the poles

  10. Neptune • Atmosphere • Very similar to Uranus in composition • Has very distinctive clouds and belts similar to Jupiter and Saturn • 13 moons • Triton has a retrograde orbit – orbits backwards, unlike other satellites in the system
