Communications • If you have any questions please email to weso.science@gmail.com with the event title in the subject line • The reply from the supervisor will be posted in the WESO weblog, http://weso2014.blogspot.com/
Topics for the Non-Experimental Section of the Test Matter (or Phases): solids, liquids, gases Transition between phases Elements, compounds, mixtures Solutes, solvents and solutions Basic Elements Periodic Table of Elements: Periods and Groups Chemical Reactions, Bonds and Equilibrium Acids and Bases, pH scale
Matter • States of matter • Atoms, molecules, sub atomic particles (electrons, protons and neutrons) Atomic mass, atomic number and atomic structure 5th graders need to know the meaning of ions and isotopes • Orbits (K, L, M) (no need for orbitals) • Properties of solid, liquid and gas
Transition between phases • Freezing, melting, evaporation, condensation, sublimation • Identify common phenomena as freezing, melting, evaporation, condensation and sublimation example: Dew formation
Elements, Compounds and Mixtures • Understand the differences between elements, compounds and mixtures • Identify common household items as elements, compounds or mixtures examples: salt, milk, water
Solutes, Solvents and Solutions • Differences between solutes, solvents and solutions • Identify the solute, solvent or solution (no complicated questions will be given) examples: air, salt dissolved in water
Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon, Aluminum, Sodium, Copper, Chlorine, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Helium, Argon Chemical formula, Atomic number, atomic mass and atomic structure example: atomic structure of Hydrogen Some basic information on these elements. The following sites are useful http://www.hobart.k12.in.us/ksms/PeriodicTable/index.htm http://www.chem4kids.com/files/elements/ 1 e Basic Elements
Another atomic structure example: Carbon Image take from http://www.tutorvista.com/content/science/science-i/atoms-molecules/atom.php#
Chemical Reactions, Bonds and Equilibrium • Basic concepts of chemical reactions, chemical bonding and chemical equilibrium • Reactants and Products • Common signs that a chemical reaction has occurred • Covalent bond & Ionic bond (do not have to study metallic bonding) • Physical and chemical changes examples: Rain turned to snow, Bike got rusty
Periodic Table of Elements • Basic organization of periodic table (periods, groups) • Metal, non-metal, or metalloid • Basic understanding of Alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, halogens, noble gases
Acid, Base and pH scale • Compare the properties of acids and bases • Uses of acids and bases in our daily life • Common household substances that are acidic, basic or neutral • Websites for examples are: http://www.ducksters.com/science/acids_and_bases.php http://www.kid-friendly-homeschool-curriculum.com/acids-and-bases.html http://www.ck12.org/user%3AZ2VsaWFzd2FycmVuQGNncHMub3Jn/book/CGPS-5th-grade/r4/section/15.3/Acids-and-Bases-%253A%253Aof%253A%253A-Chemistry-of-Solutions/ www.thesciencequeen.net/Acidbase.ppt ***** The acids and bases asked in the non-experimental section will be limited to the ones given in these sites.
Experimental Section The experimental section will be something like: Students will be asked to perform few steps given to them and then answer the questions based on their observations or Find the pH of 2 or 3 solids or liquids using pH paper. They do not have to identify the solids or the liquids. It is important that they adhere to basic lab skills given in the rules sheet.
Potions Kit • Schools are provided by WESO a potions kit. The schools that have not received it, please contact WESO • This is for the students to practice their experimental section
